The indoor-outdoor flow is effortless—large windows and doors connect the family room to the outdoor living spaces, so gathering with loved ones feels as easy outside as it does in. Every element, from the sundeck to the intimate fire circle, was designed to make this home feel like a retreat in every season.
We completed a project in the Tetherow neighborhood of Bend, OR that challenged and inspired us. Setback restraints initially limited how much we could do with the patio space, but we embraced the challenge, reinterpreted the code, and were able to expand the footprint to create a true outdoor oasis for the family.
What started as a renovation for a sunken patio became a comprehensive transformation. We added an ipe sundeck, a sleek prefabricated MOD (shipping container) pool, a formal lawn and bocce ball court, multiple zones for dining and lounging, and a dramatic firepit area with wraparound seating. Stepstone pavers tie the spaces together seamlessly, and boardform concrete walls and stairs layer in a natural, architectural texture. Cable rails ensure open sightlines, and a Japanese Maple anchors one corner of the space.
We incorporated the family’s beloved Corten steel chicken sculpture, giving it pride of place surrounded by flowering daylilies and lush greenery. Across the upper terrace, we planted native species in a formal arrangement, and a backdrop of new trees will mature to wrap the home in natural beauty.
